Today’s kids are tech savvy. Many adults joke that if they can’t figure out their computer, they ask a teen. And while you may not want a 10 year old in charge of the media department of your church, children and teenagers can be a real asset.
Using Kids in Media
We have found that many kids don’t want to just come to church, they want to serve the Lord in the church. And while churches have traditionally found a place for girls to help with the babies and the preschool children, little has been done to provide a place for kids with more technical interests. That needs to change. Most churches have a need for more volunteers. Here is a ready-made group of volunteers if you are willing to work with them.
Computers are a natural place to start. If your church uses a computer with presentation software to project the words during your worship service, start using kids to run the presentation. Even older elementary children can be taught to advance the slides during the service. Teenagers can even take on the responsibility to put the program together. Many of them have computer training at school that actually gives them an edge over adults.
But don’t stop at just the computer. Kids can learn lighting, sound and even camera work. The key is to start small. Give them an easy task and lots of encouragement. When the student shows proficiency in an area, build upon what they already know. Does your church have a separate service for children? Let the older elementary and teens run the media for that service under the direction of an adult or even an experienced teen. As the students mature in their age, confidence and knowledge, they can easily make the transition to the adult service where larger and more complicated equipment usually awaits.
God has given each of us different abilities and skills. The same applies to youth. Don’t disregard willing volunteers because they are young. Give teens and older elementary children an opportunity to serve and you just may find yourself with an expert technician in a few short years.
