Donations to Religion Versus Movies PDF Print E-mail

** Donations to Religion Versus Movie B.O.

Charitable giving to churches and other religious organizations in the United States totaled $102.3 billion last year, but the movies only made $9.62 billion at the domestic theatrical box office in 2007.

In other words, donations to religion were nearly 11 times higher! And, the charity figure only includes donations in the U.S.; the box office figure also includes movie ticket sales in Canada, which has more than 30 million people.

Donations to Religion versus Movie Box Office
Destination Amount
2007 Donations to Religion $102.30 billion
2007 Movie Box Office $   9.62 billion

Despite this huge difference, Hollywood averages about $106.6 million to produce, distribute and promote, or market, each movie it made, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. Yet, the budget for MOVIEGUIDE® and the Christian Film & Television Commission® (CFTVC) is much less than two percent of that amount for the whole year!

In the past 16 years, with the help of this ministry and its Annual Faith & Values Awards Gala and Report to Hollywood, the number of movies with positive Christian and moral content has nearly quadrupled.

Imagine, therefore, what MOVIEGUIDE® could do if people in the Church annually spent only one-tenth of what Hollywood spends on only one movie, or $10.66 million every year, to support the work of MOVIEGUIDE® and CFTVC to redeem the values of the mass media of entertainment!
